THE USMMA DOES NOT REQUIRE INSPECTION OF MARCHADORS FOR USMMA REGISTRATION. However, many owners believe the ABCCMM inspection process is a valuable tool in evaluating and preserving the quality of the Marchador breed, especially for breeding animals. A number of North American breeders and owners carry both the USMMA registration and the ABCCMM registration.registration on their horses
There are 2 types of ABCCMM inspections: 1.) a foal inspection for provisional registration; 2.)a mature horse (over age 3) inspection for definitive registration. (It is possible to do both inspections during the definitive inspection, but late fees will be assessed.)
Provisional inspection starts with recording color, markings, swirls and whorls. The foal is examined for genetic defects that could be passed on. These defects disqualify the foal. If the foal passes, they will be microchipped and hair pulled for parental verification.
At age 3 or later, physical inspection of the adult Marchador for conformation, temperament and gait. (definitive registration).
Conformation requires the horse to stand square while the inspector measures height and other body parts, including angles. Training your horse to accept a measuring stick would be helpful before the inspection day.
The horses that pass inspection are branded – either hot brand or freeze brand – with the trademarked Horseshoe M brand of the ABCCMM.
If you have a grey horse, you must use a hot brand is often used. The fire must be very hot to heat the brand which is only applied for a few seconds..
If you have a colored horse, then a freeze brand works the best. You must get liquid nitrogen usually from your vet, to get the brand cold enough. We also recommend a mild tranquilizer so the horse does not move as this brand needs to stay on the horse longer.
INSPECTION PLANNING
The cost of the inspection is $600US per location per day for the inspector. That is often paid in cash, check or Zelle directly to the inspector
In addition, you must pay for ABCCMM membership and/or registration fees, plus the cost of airfare to get the inspector to your farm. Housing, meals and transportation for the inspector should also be included in your planning. Most people just have the inspector stay with them.
The USMMA often tries to coordinate the inspection visits for our members to share the airfare costs where possible. Sometimes, it may be possible to share the inspector for a day in a given area and split the travel and housing fees.
We estimate a definitive registration (riding) inspection could take an hour and a half per horse and perhaps 15- 25 minutes per provisional (foal) inspection. If there is time remaining in your day, you can use the inspector to help you with your riding, Marchador gait training or questions, recommendations for breeding and more.
Getting READY for the big day!
If you are an ABCCMM member, you should get a login and password to the ABCCMM registration system to do transactions on-line like – sign on to report breedings, births and even pay debts using a credit card.
Please check that the ABCCMM database is correct for the Mangalarga Marchadors you have to be inspected.
If you have updates, please provide them to us so the inspector can get the authorizations he needs from the ABCCMM registration office.
Please record new foals using the ABCCMM system ahead of time – those are communication of breeding and communication of birth.
If you would like to use UCDAVIS to process foal hair for parental verification, please ask for the UCDAVIS forms from the USMMA Registrar Randy Conilogue before the inspection day. Randy’s email registrar@namarchador.org. George has to pull the foal hair and he needs to sign one form as the person who took the hair. The USMMA needs a photo, scan or paper copy of that form that George signs to send to the ABCCMM Registration office. You need to mail the form with the hair to UCDAVIS. (The other option is to have the hair taken back to Brazil to the ABCCMM lab, then the USMMA gets a copy of that record from them. However, coat color testing would need a new hair sample sent to UCDavis).
